Dr. Emorie Beck is an Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of California, Davis. She received her PhD from Washington University in St. Louis and her BA from Brown University. Dr. Beck’s research focuses on what personality is, which has consequences for how we measure personality, what those measures predict both short- and long-term, how personality is thought to change. She studies how to understand the personality of an individual relative to only themself, relative to some others, and relative to all others. She aims to use complementary insights from these different perspectives to understand who is at risk for chronic diseases (e.g., dementia) and how we can foster health and well-being for an individual. For example, while one of her recent studies demonstrated that poor well-being is a risk-factor for dementia diagnoses, another study demonstrated that one-size-fits-all approaches to improving well-being are unlikely to effective. Dr. Beck has received numerous awards, including the UC Davis College of Letters & Sciences Research Innovation Award and the European Association of Personality Psychology Early Achievement Award.
