Breakout Session #1 Options

Giving Ideas that Won’t Get Rejected

Speaker:  Kimberly D. Elsbach, PhD – Graduate School of Management

Participants will learn why good ideas can be rejected if they are given in a way that threatens the recipient’s personal identity.  Learn how to customize idea-giving so that your ideas are most likely to be accepted.

Kimberly ElsbachKimberly D. Elsbach (PhD Stanford University) is Professor of Management and Stephen G. Newberry Chair in Leadership at the Graduate School of Management, University of California, Davis.  She is also an International Research Fellow at the Center for Corporate Reputation, Oxford University, Editor-in-Chief for Academy of Management Annals, and co-founder and organizer of the Davis Conference on Qualitative Research. Kim's research focuses on perception – specifically how people perceive each other and their organizations.  She has studied these perceptual processes in variety of contexts ranging from the California cattle industry, and the National Rifle Association, to Hollywood screenwriters.  Her most recent work examines how crying at work affects perceptions of professional women at work and how self-perceptions influence one’s willingness to take ideas in creative collaborations. 

 

How to be Persuasive Without Being Abrasive

Speaker:  Vicky Tibbs – MBA, SPHR, Change Management Consultant

The reality is that we all need to get along with people at some point in our lives, whether it be at work or home – so it really does pay off to be able to persuasively state your opinions when you need to.

Vicky TibbsVicky has worked at UC Davis Health for 15 years. Prior to joining Organizational Excellence, she was the HR Business Partner in the Department of Internal Medicine. Throughout her tenure at UC Davis Health she has provide expert advice on strategy to address operational changes and continuous improvement. Vicky has a Master’s in Business Administration, is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), a Certified Practitioner and Certified Trainer Prosci/ADKAR Change Management, the UC Davis Health Crucial Conversations Certified Trainer, as well as a certified administrator of The Leadership Circle 360 evaluation and has completed coach training through the Coaches Training Institute.

Mindfulness At Work

Speaker:  Neesha Patel - PhD, Behavioral Health Consultant

Mindfulness is receiving increasing scientific support as an effective tool for both stress resilience and productivity. Join us for an experiential session to learn about mindfulness and how it can resource the most important asset in the modern workplace.

Neesha PatelNeesha Patel, PhD is a licensed psychologist and UCLA-certified mindfulness facilitator. With over a decade of experience, she has offered mindfulness training at UCLA, UCSF and UC Berkeley, and throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.  She currently serves as a psychologist in the UC Davis Staff and Faculty Health and Well-Being Program, providing mindfulness training, stress resilience and emotional well-being programs to faculty and staff.

Amy ShumanAmy is a Gallup Certified CliftonStrengths Coach and a Human Resources Business Partner for the Division of Student Affairs at UC Davis. Amy specializes in team trainings within Higher Education for staff, and helps coach employees to set and reach goals. She works with leadership on best practice development, people management, engagement and workplace climate.  Amy is also a certified Change Management trainer and practitioner through ProSci.
